Torfaen County Borough Council Youth Service offers a number of training courses for youth workers and staff are encouraged to attend as many courses as possible.

The Key Skills for Youth Work.
This introductory course is ideal for the person newly appointed. All new youth workers in Torfaen will be expected to attend this course within a short time of being appointed.

The Foundation course.
After completion of the Key Skills course staff may enrol on the foundation course which upon successful completion affords the status of a locally qualified youth worker. Attainment of this level also improves the basic rate of pay. Any further courses e.g. Certificate in Higher Education, Diploma in Higher Education or B.A. (Hons) Youth and Community are undertaken on the staff members own initiative without pay (or with sessional pay at the discretion of the area development worker).

 Optional modules.
In addition to the Key Skills and Foundation course are optional modules covering Sports Leadership Award, Craft Courses, Duke of Edinburgh scheme, First Aid, Outdoor Education topics, Canllaw on-line, Health and Safety and Risk Assessment, Basic Counselling Skills, Food Hygiene, Violence in the Workplace, Equal Opportunities, Behaviour Management, Health issues, Outreach/Detached work etc..
