Senior Member Training

The Torfaen OCN in Senior Member Training commenced in February 2003 and are designed for young people over the age of 16, the aim of the course is to give an insight into the day to day running of a youth centre.

The courses give the young people the opportunity to complete an OCN level 2 course and the criteria used  is based on one developed by the YMCA comprising of six modules with information on:

  • Icebreakers

  • Administration

  • Health and Safety

  • Equal Opportunities

  • Communication Skills

  • Club activities and programme planning

Course Criteria Details

The courses are run for groups of up to ten young people from individual youth clubs who attend the residential weekend with staff from their own youth club. Individual modules are delivered by guest visiting tutors. On completion of the weekend the young people have to carry out a number of set activities back in their own youth club and evidence of this is included in their portfolios. The course is designed to follow the Curriculum Statement for Wales by being participative, educative, empowering and expressive. The young people learning skills on the weekend which give them an insight into youth work and also acts as a stepping stone for formal youth work qualifications such as the Key Skills for Youth Work and the Youth Work Foundation course, both of which are available as in service training courses in Torfaen for trainee youth workers and staff over the age of eighteen.
