Newgale Summer Camp 2001 |

Newgale 2001. On 31st July 2001we departed for Newgale camp site in West Wales with 18 young people, various staff and three tons of equipment/food/bikes/canoes. The camp had already been set up so, on arrival, tents were allocated, complaints ignored and friendships struck. Bedtimes were very flexible - to the point of non-existence, but were the staff downhearted ? (Yes). Team games were organised for the evenings and activities for the days. We went climbing/abseiling, canoeing, surfing, biking, (shopping!) played games on the beach and visited several places of interest, such as St David's Cathedral. This visit proved very interesting and was very popular with the youngsters who were given "the guided tour" by a more competent member of our staff, for whom, a job with Club 18-30 surely waits. After four days we took the first group home and returned with the second group of 16. The weather kept fine - evenings were cold though - until the second week when we were struck by the dreaded gales. Tents were flattened, the field was virtually flooded and we all huddled in the supplies tent and played charades and guessing games. It takes a lot to beat our gang. We had our share of mishaps and a couple of trips to the local Casualty Department but, on the whole, the nine days passed without any great problems. All in all the trip was voted an overwhelming success and looks sure to be repeated. |
