At the Open Award Centre participants choose what activity they would like to take part in. The Open Award Centre then tries to match the young persons choice with suitable people or agencies best suited to act as assessors and trainers. The centre pays great attention to using only agencies whose staff have a satisfactory Criminal Record Bureau check completed. If this is not possible then a member of staff from the open award centre will accompany the young person when visits are required.

As part of his skills section one lad has chosen "Reptiles" as his study section and is seen here handling a 6ft Burmese Python at a local business that specialises in exotic animals. Other visits were arranged to the small animal centre at Usk College where under the guidance of suitably qualified staff he was able to produce a portfolio of his study of reptiles and spiders. this portfolio then served as evidence of his commitment to his chosen subject.
Some of the other projects completed in the skills section have included a motor mechanics course with the local Territorial Army unit,  a computer desktop publishing course at Fairwater leisure centre and constructing and making camping equipment. One young lady completed a hard of hearing sign language course whilst another completed a gardening skills section.
