Duke of Edinburgh Award
Gilwern Residential
Training Weekend
October 8th 9th 10th 2004

The weekend centred around teambuilding and the completion of two level one OCNs.

The silver award group completed an OCN on teamwork which looked at group structures, roles within groups and group styles of leadership. The young people having to identify groups they were members of and relating their experiences within these group to the theory covered in the taught OCN sessions. Sounds heavy going but by the end of the taught sessions the young people understood how the theory related to their own group experiences and their own roles within the groups.

The bronze group completed an OCN around Campcraft skills covering topics such as camp cookers and stoves, types of tents and sleeping bags, the country code, camp hygiene and basic camp craft skills

Both groups took part in teambuilding exercises and also had the opportunity to use the excellent confidence course at Gilwern Outdoor Centre including the climbing wall, Jacob's ladder, trapeze and crate mountain. This excellent session tutored by the staff at Gilwern centre certainly increased team bonding and also highlighted many personal skills which the young people were not aware they possessed.

The evaluation at the end of the weekend indicated that the young people preferred completing an OCN on a residential basis on a weekend rather than over an extended period of evenings in the normal meeting sessions, so it is probable that more courses of this type will be planned for the future.
