Whilst in Bruchsal they
were given a guided tour of the Schloss, a palace in the centre of the
town. This magnificent building was almost totally destroyed by an air raid in March 1945, just months before the end of World War II. Now completely rebuilt and restored the building houses many fine works of art, has some excellent wall and ceiling murals and a super display of crystal chandeliers. Much of the artwork is framed in 24 carat gold leaf. The following day a visit to Heidelberg was arranged. This gave the young people the opportunity to discover the delights of this picturesque German tourist town with fine castle and riverside walks. The evening before the youth festival the young people were introduced to Bruchsal Youth Council, who had arranged the It's a Knockout competition. Following the evening meal they were also introduced to the team from France. Language was not a problem and the Welsh contingent lost no time in introducing themselves and making the French young people welcome. It provided the ideal opportunity to try out some school learnt French and German. On Saturday, after a meal of Spaghetti Bolognese with the Burgermeister in the Town Hall, the festival started with street performances and music from live bands. The It's a Knockout competition consisted of ten simple but effective games with titles like Drunk Elephant, Soapy Slide, Blind Horses as well as better known favourites such as an Egg and Spoon and Sack Race. The young people from each town were put into mixed teams so no one country competed against any other. This worked out very well and did much to further strengthen already strong friendships. |

The whole visit was superb and after returning home emails
received from our German hosts congratulated the Welsh young people on
their behaviour and friendliness. They reported that they considered them
to be very fine young people and perfect ambassadors for Cwmbran. Needless
to say future visits have already been asked for and plans are under way
for similar events in 2004. This visit was arranged by Cwmbran Community Council, Cwmbran Friends of Bruchsal society, Bruchsal Friends of Cwmbran Society and Torfaen Youth Service. Transport was minibus to Stansted airport, then a flight with Ryanair to Frankfurt Hahn airport. We were met at Frankfurt by Klaus Eberle and Emil Senger who with driver Karl Heinz, transported us to Bruchsal by mini coach.
